This passage was one of the few for which my time was shorter than that of the Beagle. She arrived at Puerto Coral on 8th January 1835, three days out from Ancud. She remained at anchor there for two weeks while Darwin and FitzRoy travelled up the Río Valdivia by boat. They found that ‘The town of Valdivia is seated on the low banks of the river: it is completely hidden in a wood of Apple trees; the streets are merely paths in an orchard - I never saw this fruit in such abundance.’ 4

Valdivia in 39 degrees south was founded in 1552 by one of Francisco Pizarro's lieutenants, Pedro de Valdivia. A year later he was rash enough to offer battle to the redoubtable Araucanian Indians. The Indians under their chieftain Lautaro won the battle of Tucapel. They slaughtered the little Spanish army and took Valdivia prisoner. He was tortured with refined cruelty and was finally killed by having molten gold poured down his throat.
